Group of Able Skill Students and an instructor in the Gas Workshop

Have you been considering a career in gas? There are plenty of reasons why working in the trade remains such an attractive prospect.

From high-earning potential to the varied and rewarding nature of the role, we’ve picked out a handful of reasons why you might want to consider a career as a gas engineer.

1. Initial training can be completed in just eight weeks

If you were to enrol in our New Entrant Gas Training Package 3, which takes participants from complete beginner through to being ready for Gas Safe Registration, the initial part of this, Stage 1, which covers your domestic gas training, could be completed in just eight weeks.

Following that, this learning package includes an additional week to complete your Boiler Fault Finding and Wiring and Controls Courses, and upon the completion of your portfolio (150 hours), an extra five days to complete your ACS assessments.

2. You can fit training around other commitments

We’re well aware that traditional trade training routes don’t always suit those with prior commitments, which is why many of our courses can be completed on a part-time, flexible basis tailored to each individual.

3. Flexible payment plans to suit your budget

Able Skills courses can be paid for in more manageable instalments, with just a deposit needed to begin your training towards a new career

4. Savings offered on bulk training bookings

Our gas training packages—like the New Entrant Gas Training Package 3—offer significant value to anyone looking to complete various training levels in one bulk booking.

5. An ageing workforce sparking demand

In the coming years, demand for qualified gas engineers looks set to remain high, with recent data suggesting that more than a third of the oil and gas workforce are over 50 and nearing retirement—a massive contrast to just 12% who are under 30.

6. Above-average salary

The average annual salary for a gas engineer in the UK is £37,747* according to Indeed, which is considerably more than the UK average of  £31,447*.

7. Challenging and rewarding work

The work of a gas engineer can be incredibly varied, with two days rarely consecutively the same. The profession is perfect for anyone who likes to get hands-on and enjoys problem-solving.

8. A valuable additional skill

Our Managed Learning Programmes have become increasingly popular with those already working in trade with transferable skills—plumbers for instance—who are looking to expand their capabilities to include gas, while still being able to work and earn as they train.
