Britons training to get their approved qualifications in electrician or plumbing courses have been told that experience as an apprentice should be valued by companies.

Speaking after the announcement that more apprenticeship places are to be made available by the Department for Business, Innovation and Skills (BIS), chairman of The Recruitment Society Steve Huxham commented that the schemes can be very beneficial.

"Personally I think employers should see an awful lot of value in more traditional-style apprenticeships," he said.

He went on to add that it is important for the government to make more places available for trainees to gain work experience with a company.

Those planning on taking an electrician or plumber training course may benefit from an apprenticeship scheme to provide essential industry skills in a real-world environment.

It was revealed by the Department for Business, Innovation and Skills that it will supply £17 million to provide more apprenticeship places between 2010 and 2011.
