If you’re already working in carpentry or are considering becoming a carpenter, one qualification that you might be aware of is the Carpentry NVQ Level 3, sometimes referred to as an NVQ Level 3 in woodworking.  This is an advanced carpentry qualification that assesses workplace competence – it proves you can do the work in a professional setting. It’s aimed at experienced site carpenters and carpenters who want to move into site supervisor roles.

NVQs are work-based competency qualifications. The workshop and classroom are for learning; that’s where a Level 3 Carpentry Diploma is done. It’s out in the real world of site work that a carpenter is assessed for their NVQ Level 3.

This guide explains more about the Carpentry NVQ Level 3.

What is a Carpentry NVQ Level 3?

A Carpentry NVQ Level 3 is a qualification that demonstrates competence in the workplace. In this case, as it’s a site carpentry NVQ, it demonstrates the competence of an advanced site carpenter.

Someone wanting to gain an NVQ Level 3 in Carpentry will be expected to have done the relevant advanced carpentry training or have the equivalent on-the-job training and relevant experience.

The reason for holding any construction NVQ Level 3 is to demonstrate your experience and a higher level of skill, which, in turn, may open up work opportunities in site management. By holding a construction-related NVQ at Level 3, workers are eligible to apply for a Gold CSCS card (Advanced Craft), which recognises advanced skill sets.

Carpentry NVQ Level 3 entry requirements

To be in a position to pursue any construction NVQ at Level 3, a candidate must have the appropriate knowledge, skills and experience in their craft. Typically, they may already hold a Level 3 diploma, or they’ll have years of experience working in the industry, during which time they will have learnt advanced and complex techniques and will understand all aspects of site work.

Carpentry NVQ Level 3 pathways

There are several routes to achieving an NVQ Level 3 in Carpentry.

Carpentry apprenticeship

A carpentry apprenticeship is a route that combines on-the-job work with classroom learning, usually resulting in achieving both a diploma and an NVQ. The apprentice will usually already have undertaken their Level 2; the Level 3 is the next step.

Level 3 Carpentry Diploma

If you’ve completed a Level 2 Diploma in carpentry or you have 5 years of industry experience and you want to develop practical site carpentry skills to an advanced level, a City & Guilds Level 3 Carpentry Diploma focuses on underlying carpentry principles and high-level practical skills, as well as technical and regulatory knowledge.

A Level 2 qualification focuses on underpinning knowledge, whereas a Level 3 qualification covers more complex work, advanced site skills and greater responsibility.

This provides a solid foundation to progress to an NVQ Level 3; while working in the industry, you’re ready to sign up to the NVQ process.

Experienced worker NVQ in carpentry

For carpenters already working in the industry, an Experienced Worker Practical Assessment is a route that takes into account your experience, giving you a path to pursuing an Experienced Worker NVQ in carpentry if you don’t need additional training.

How is the Carpentry NVQ Level 3 assessed?

As an NVQ is a declaration of competence, the carpentry NVQ assessments take place in the workplace.

With the relevant qualifications and/or experience, a candidate can sign up to the NVQ process, start collecting a carpentry portfolio of evidence to demonstrate competence and prepare for on-site assessment.

What career progression is available at this level?

At this level, a carpenter is capable of complex and advanced woodworking. That’s bespoke structures out of wood, things like staircases and roofs. They are also capable of taking on responsibilities for other workers, so this level of site supervisor qualification can support experienced site carpenters with career progression.

FAQs about carpentry NVQs

Can I pursue an NVQ Level 3 in carpentry without a Level 2 qualification?

Yes, but you’d need to have the relevant experience, where you’ve built up the skills, as well as technical knowledge and regulatory knowledge, and have been working in the industry for a number of years.
