Technicians who have completed electrical courses may find that new job opportunities become available in Stockport if one local authority's plans come to fruition.

Stockport Council has announced its intention to buy the Grand Central complex - currently housing a cinema and ten-pin bowling centre - to convert it into office space, hotel accommodation, parking spaces and potentially a new "gateway" to the town centre.

Dave Goddard, leader of the local authority, described how the project could create up to 700 jobs in the area, with some of those potentially going to engineers who have taken electrical courses.

In his opinion, it is important for the council to buy the building, explaining: "If we don't buy it, there's a chance that someone else will and sit on it for ten years. By doing this we can gain control of Stockport's key gateway asset."

Meanwhile, Sheffield City Council's regeneration efforts in the Castlegate Quarter district have been boosted by the news that market buildings in the neighbourhood will not be listed.
