News that two offshore substation platforms will be built by Harland and Wolff could provoke more technicians in the surrounding area to sign up for an electrical course.

The firm won the contract to design and build the structures on the north Wales offshore wind farm at Gwynt y Mor, with chief executive at the company Robert J Cooper stating that it shows the organisation's commitment to the marine renewable energy industry.

It has been predicted that the development will be completed by June 2012, which suggests some engineers may have time to sign up to an electrical course to help them in any application to work on the project.

Mr Cooper said: "We are already a recognised renewables logistics base and prototype builder and are delighted to have been awarded this contract."

This summer, Harland and Wolff was also awarded the contract to build a prototype of a 250kW tidal turbine, which will potentially be put into use at the European Marine Energy Centre in the Orkneys.
