Tradespersons who have approved electrical qualifications could find that they are in demand to help with the refurbishment of six schools in Somerset.

It was recently revealed by Bam that a consortium consisting of its construction and facilities management arms has been named on a contract worth £600 million to renovate the institutions for Somerset County Council and become the authority's private sector partner.

The deal is part of the Building Schools for the Future (BSF) programme.

Commenting on the announcement, Robert Young, director of Bam PPP, said: "Across the whole Bam organisation we are thoroughly delighted at having been appointed by Somerset County Council as its partner for such an exciting and wide reaching programme of work."

And the developments could lead to the employment prospects of local tradespersons receiving a boost, with well-fitted technology and appliances essential to top-quality schools.

Bam has origins that stretch back to 1874 and was last year awarded with six gold medals at the Considerate Constructors Scheme.
