With vaccine rollouts underway, even for young people in the coming weeks, hopes of an end to national lockdowns, and investments made in technologies during the pandemic, the industry is electrical industry is pushing ahead to better times.

Here at Able Skills we are doing our part through Electrician courses to ensure the next generation of electricians have the confidence, qualifications and skills to enter the industry with self-assurance. The knowledge and ability you will gain at our centre goes above and beyond the industry standard for new entrants!

We offer a complete spectrum of courses. Some for those with completely no experience at all, allowing you to learn to become an electrician from scratch. Like our City & Guilds Level 2 Electrical Course which will give you a foundation to build on.

At the other end of the spectrum we offer courses for experienced traders looking to achieve an NVQ, an AM2 or maybe something more advanced like our Level 4 Award in the Design and Verification of Electrical Installations...

We even offer remote NVQ options:

During the pandemic we looked for ways to offer training from a distance and our NVQ Level 3 E-Portfolio courses are here to stay! Traditionally, an electrical NVQ is achieved via work/site based assessment and portfolio building and AM2. Our remote option will work in the exact same way. You will start by collecting evidence on the job such as photos and videos of different tasks, then you will be visited on the job over 2-occations...

Remotely, these visitations will be carried out through video conferencing software, using a webcam on a computer or a phone. You will create an E-portfolio online through 'Learning Assistant' by City & Guilds and complete the AM2 at a trusted centre near you. Give us a call on 01322 280 202 for more information on remote options.

What is happening in the world of electricians?

Overall the industry seems to be back in action. Residential work appears to be back to pre-pandemic levels and even growing beyond the numbers seen a year ago. Commercial construction is slowly returning. Utilities are expected to make a comeback in 2021 to make up for lost time.

COVID-19 impacts are still a factor, such as delays and cancellations of projects among distributors. However, self-employed electricians are seeing plenty of work and even taking bookings well in advance.

The current average yearly earnings for a new electrician is around £33,495! This is the highest amongst all tradespeople. However, established electricians tend to work on a self-employed or contract basis, meaning their earnings will change depending on the types of jobs and the amount of work an electrician is able to do within a year.

Up-skilling with further training is a great way increase your skills set and your earning potential. There are also plenty of new roles for electricians out there. Markets like green energy, changes in technology, EV charging and so on are creating even more types of work for electricians to earn with.

Fully-qualified professional vs. Domestic Installer route:

Even if you want to become a Domestic Installer, gaining a JIB Gold Card will help you expand your career. There have been some changes to the competent persons scheme making it more complicated than ever before.

We encouraged people down this path for years when the Part P schemes and regulations started in 2005, however, the newest route is not worth the trouble. We now focus on helping people to become fully-qualified electricians.

Our Gold Card Approved Electrician Package is the A - Z of electrical training. It includes almost every electrical course that we offer at our training centre such as  City & Guilds Level 2City & Guilds Level 3PAT Testing, 18th Edition, Inspection & Testing and an AM2 assessment! Overall the training will take around 15-weeks to complete with some extra days for assessments that can be arranged to suit you.
