What Is the Gold Card?
The JIB Gold Card, also known as the ECS Gold Card, is perhaps one of the most well-known requirements within the electrical industry. The JIB Gold Card is the highest standard card for installation electricians and is considered the industry benchmark for a fully qualified electrician.
Step 1 - City & Guilds Level 2 Diploma in Electrical Installations (2365-02)
You will start with learning the fundamental requirements for undertaking an electrical installation as well as information relating to the structure and organisation of the electrical industry via the C&G 2365 Level 2.
Step 2 - 18th Edition Wiring Regulations (City & Guilds 2382-26)
You will also receive extended training to better understand and achieve the 18th Edition Wiring Regulations — C&G 2382-22. This qualification is a mandatory requirement for any Gold Card application.
Step 3 - City & Guilds Level 3 Diploma in Electrical Installations (2365-03)
You will move on to more advanced information on the C&G 2365 Level 3, covering scientific principles, fault diagnosis and rectification, as well as receiving an abundance of knowledge on inspection and testing and installation design.
Step 4 - NVQ Level 3 in Electrotechnical Technology (City & Guilds 2357)
Once working in the industry, you build a portfolio of evidence to demonstrate on-site competence. The City and Guilds 2357 NVQ assesses the skills you learned during your electrical training and whilst on-site.
Step 5 - AM2 End-Point Assessment*
Achievement Measurement 2 — or AM2 — is an independent assessment designed to enable learners to demonstrate electrotechnical occupational competence. It is a practical assessment with a short online component, taken over 16.5 hours in total. You undertake a series of timed tasks working on standard wiring systems; the exercises include installation, inspection, testing and fault-finding.
*AM2 to be booked after NVQ completion at an additional cost (currently £1,062 inc vat)
Qualified Electrician
Once you’ve passed your AM2 your training is complete and you’ll be a qualified electrician.
The full timeline for this route is typically 18 to 24 months from enrolment to Gold Card, depending on how quickly you progress through each stage. The lengthier part of this route being the NVQ as tis is work based assessment and time can vary across candidates and availability of work.
