Workers who have completed electrician training courses could find themselves in demand to help with a new government campaign.

The Department for Business, Innovation and Skills - which is led by Peter Mandelson and has close to 2,900 staff - announced yesterday (March 2nd) that it aims to get an extra 7.5 million Brits connected to the internet by 2014 as part of the National Digital Participation Plan.

Commenting on the news, minister for digital Britain Stephen Timms said: "Being online is crucial for participation in the 21st century society – the internet unlocks a wealth of information and services."

The strategy will require the delivery of free computers and internet connections to families with schoolchildren, as well as an update of Britain's broadband networks.

Such improvements could leave tradespersons who have approved electrical qualifications with greater job prospects - especially given that top-quality workers would be needed to ensure the top-of-the-range connections are supplied.
