Tradespersons with approved plumbing qualifications could find that they are inundated with requests for their services if the cold snap continues.

American plumber Tom Wahl from Elgin, Illinois, recently told the Courier-News that freezing weather will usually lead to problems with frozen pipes, which could potentially cause severe water damage in homes.

"Usually, you need below-zero temperatures for three days," he warned, which might put homeowners on alert given that cold weather has been experienced nationwide for a number of weeks and the Met Office has recently released severe weather warnings.

Mr Wahl added that he has seen a number of people try to thaw out their frozen pipes with a blowtorch, leading to fires in their homes.

With this being the case, it may be the expertise of professional plumbers is increasingly called upon to help homeowners with problems caused by the cold snap.

Insurance provider Aviva recently stated that 500 per cent more water damage claims were made as a result of the cold weather last year.
