When thinking about changing careers or learning a trade, you’ll be looking for a reputable trades training provider. It’s therefore inevitable that you’ll have questions about the training courses. How much do they cost? How long will it take? What qualification will I get at the end?
We’ve been speaking to prospective students for over 20 years and, unfortunately, we do hear from people who signed up elsewhere only to discover long delays, limited availability, or unclear outcomes. Always ask questions before booking your training.
Below are some of the most common questions we’re asked about training at Able Skills.

Some courses also offer home study or modular formats for added flexibility.

We don’t currently offer evening courses. Training takes place on weekdays and weekends only.
How long will it take to get qualified?
This depends on:
- The trade you’re training in

- Any existing experience you may already have
Contact us to discuss your goals and we’ll give you a realistic timescale based on your circumstances.

We run courses throughout the year across multiple trade areas. Availability varies, so it’s best to:

- Or call us in case we have last-minute spaces available
Are there any entry requirements?
As a private training provider, we don’t require Functional Skills or academic qualifications for most courses.
However, some courses do have specific entry requirements. For example, you’ll normally need a recognised Level 2 qualification before progressing to a Level 3 course.
Are your qualifications City & Guilds?
Yes. We are a City & Guilds approved centre and primarily offer City & Guilds qualifications. We also work with other highly recognised awarding bodies including AIM, LCL, BPEC and NOCN.
Many of our in-house courses are also assured by City & Guilds, reflecting the high standard of our training.
Can I complete my gas portfolio through Able Skills?
Yes. If you’re not completing your gas training with us, contact us to discuss arranging a portfolio placement with a Gas Safe Registered Engineer.
If you’re already a gas student at Able Skills, you’ll have the option of a guaranteed placement.
Will I get work after completing a course?
We can never guarantee employment. However, we consistently receive positive feedback from students after they complete their training, and we don’t get people calling us to say they’ve trained and still can’t find work.
If you’re considering construction training as a new career, we’re happy to discuss the most suitable qualifications for your goals.
Can I visit the training centre before enrolling?
Absolutely. We operate an open house policy, meaning you can visit any time we’re open — no appointment needed.
Just report to the office and a member of staff will show you around. You’ll be able to see training in progress and ask any questions.
