Gas training courses and qualifications could greatly benefit the health of homeowners in the UK, a recent legal case has suggested.

According to the Health and Safety Executive (HSE), Mohammed Ikram, a landlord form Sheffield, was prosecuted for failing to ensure gas appliances at one of his leased-out properties were safe and fit for purpose.

A combination boiler, gas fire and associated flues in the house had not been regularly checked and certified by a qualified Gas Safe engineer, which left the tenant at risk of carbon monoxide poisoning.

This prevents the blood from delivering oxygen to cells, organs and tissues in the body and kills around 20 people in the UK every year.

Ikram was consequently fined £350 and ordered to pay £750 in costs.

Commenting on the news, HSE inspector Steve Kay said: "Landlords are legally required to ensure the gas appliances at properties they own are checked and certified at least once a year to ensure they are working properly and safely."
