There could be new interest in renewable energy courses if the government manages to engage with consumers using its Green Deal project.

Sustain Worldwide sustainability and communications director Gordon Miller pointed out that the so-called green sector has been earmarked by the coalition as an area that can provide new employment opportunities.

Some of these jobs could go to workers trained on renewable energy courses, but Mr Miller pointed out that the Green Deal must be a success if many roles are going to be created.

He said: "If the government is to use it as its main tool to drive domestic energy awareness, it's pretty critical that it has an impact."

In his opinion, another factor that must be taken into account is the UK's pledge to reduce CO2 emissions by 80 per cent by 2050.

This week, the Federation of Master Builders announced the results of a YouGov survey, showing 59 per cent of the public believe more needs to be done by the government to improve energy efficiency in UK homes.
