There may soon be greater demand for renewable energy courses after it was revealed that consumption of this type of electricity has almost doubled in Europe over ten years.

From 1999 to 2009, the proportion of power used coming from sustainable sources increased from five per cent to nine per cent in the continent, according to a study by Eurostat.

This trend may prompt more tradesmen in the UK to take renewable energy courses, particularly since there is so much scope for expansion in the sector.

While Latvia and Sweden generate 36 per cent and 34 per cent of their power using sustainable methods, the UK manages just three per cent currently.

Eurostat is a European Commission (EC) organisation that gathers statistics in EU member states to monitor whether countries are meeting energy targets.

The EC is aiming for nations to reduce their greenhouse gas emissions by 20 per cent by 2020, while renewable energy should account for 20 per cent of energy supply by the same year.
