Consumers have been encouraged to personalise their home and make it unique, which may involve them attending electrical courses to gain the necessary expertise.

Jason Orme, editor of Homebuilding & Renovating magazine, said he believes people design their property as they see fit - ignoring whether or not other individuals agree with aesthetic decisions.

Homeowners who decide to undertake DIY projects to personalise their property may require electrical courses to learn the relevant techniques to install certain equipment.

"Obviously we all like to see tastefully done projects that meet trends, but ultimately people should make houses into what they want," added Mr Orme.

He stressed that it is not hard for new owners to reverse any unusual changes carried out by previous tenants.

Recent research by Post Office Mortgages showed the least popular design fads in recent times are items such as mock fireplaces and Artex walls.

It also indicated 69 per cent of over 55s might object to buying a property as a result of seeing poorly completed DIY projects.
