Think you can’t fit training in? Think again. A home study electrical course offers a more flexible approach to learning.

How does it work? Using a training pack and City & Guilds resources, you study at home before doing the practical training and assessments in the centre when you’re ready. Retraining could be easier than you think. This route can take you from no experience to working towards becoming a qualified electrician through structured training and assessment.

Who is a Home Study Electrical Course suitable for?

A home study electrical course is ideal for beginners, career changers and those returning to work who wants to do a Level 2 or Level 3 electrical training.

Because it offers more flexibility when working through the course content, it suits anyone who wants to fit trades training around their current work or caring commitments – an ideal option for career changers. It’s also a smart choice for people who just prefer learning in their own time.

How does Home Study Electrics work?

There are three steps to a home study electric course:

  1. Study theory at home
  2. Attend centre for practical training
  3. Complete assessments and qualifications

When you enrol on a home study course, you’ll be provided with our instructor-built training pack that works with the City & Guilds course resources and SmartScreen portal.

It’s up to you then how long it takes to go through the study pack, but we recommend that you spend at least 6 weeks on it. You’ll need to be comfortable with the content, so you understand all the theory units before you book in to do the in-centre weeks. This knowledge will help you understand the practical aspects and exams when you come into the centre.

What are the benefits of a distance learning electrical course?

Flexibility: Start when you’re ready. Learn in your own time. Fit studying around your life.

Financial: Pay as you train and spread the course fees across the duration of your learning.

Career confidence: Gain an industry-recognised qualification and confidence in your skills without the time pressure of a fixed course.

What Electrical Installation courses are available for home study?

Both the Level 2 and Level 3 City & Guilds in Electrical Installation are available as diplomas via distance learning options. We also have a comprehensive package that includes NVQ and AM2 if the Gold Card is your goal.

All these courses are delivered through a mix of home study for the theory and in-centre attendance for practical work and assessments. In the case of the Gold Card package, this also requires work-based assessment for the NVQ element.

These are the same City & Guilds qualifications that we offer as standard full-time or part-time courses in the centre. The benefit is that you get to do the main bulk of the learning at home, studying electrical installation theory from our course study pack and SmartScreen. You’ll put that learning into practice when you book your in-centre weeks.
