Tradespersons in the UK who have successfully completed accredited gas training courses might find that their job prospects are improved following a recent prosecution of an illegal worker.

According to the Health and Safety Executive (HSE), serial gas offender Ryan Thorpe from West Yorkshire has been given a suspended jail sentence for removing and gas appliances in two homes last year.

In one of the properties, Thorpe - who was not on the Gas Safe Register - failed to seal a joint on a pipe running from the gas meter, which caused an extremely serious gas leak.

Commenting after the case, HSE inspector Andrew Denison said: "Anyone carrying out gas work must be appropriately qualified and accredited. [The] HSE will not hesitate to take action against anyone found to be carrying out this work illegally and endangering lives."

The body was established in 1975 and aims to prevent ill-health, injury and death to workers and people affected by work activities.
