Keep core qualifications up to date to maintain your Gas Safe Registration

Gas Engineer at Able Skills

When working in the gas industry, it's essential to keep core qualifications up to date to ensure continuous accreditation and compliance with Gas Safe registration.

If your ACS has recently expired or is due to expire soon, you will need to renew (by doing a reassessment) in order to renew your Gas Safe Registration.

This article explains what ACS reassessment is, how ACS reassessments are done, and why these qualifications are crucial for Gas Safe Registered Engineers.

ACS Reassessments for Gas Safe Registered Engineers

Gas Safe Registrations are renewed annually. As a gas engineer, you’ll apply to renew in advance of the registration expiry date, to ensure you can continue to work legally on gas.

If you're working in the gas industry, one of the requirements for Gas Safe Registration is to hold a valid Nationally Accredited Certification Scheme (ACS) certificate. These are the industry-recognised core qualifications, and each gas engineer is responsible for keeping them up to date to ensure continual Gas Safe Registration. Anyone not on the Gas Safe Register cannot legally carry out gas work.

If you’re a Gas Safe Registered Engineer, you’ll have already done your ACS before registering with Gas Safe. Each core qualification certificate is valid for 5 years, and then it's necessary to renew through an ACS reassessment.

What is ACS?

Accredited Certification Scheme (ACS for short) are the industry-recognised core gas safety qualification in the industry.

The initial ACS assessment (CCN1/CPA1) is a requirement of the Gas Safe Register, meaning that all gas engineers need to have it before they can apply for Gas Safe Registration – a legal requirement for working in the UK.

Completing the assessment proves that you, the gas engineer, have the appropriate skills and knowledge about gas safety regulations and procedures.

The initial ACS accreditation lasts for five years. After that, a reassessment has to be done to renew the qualification. There are separate ACS for domestic or commercial settings.

What is ACS Reassessment?

ACS Reassessment is for category 1 candidates – experienced gas fitters already working in the industry who have existing knowledge and skills and are looking to renew their certification if it has expired in the last 12 months.  It can also be done up to 6 months before any element is due to expire.

The ACS Reassessment covers 5 days of assessments on your practical skills and theory.

Who is the ACS Reassessment for?

The ACS Gas Reassessment has been designed especially for category 1 candidates who are experienced gas fitters with existing gas knowledge and skills.

It is suitable for engineers whose certificates have expired within the last twelve months or are due to expire in the near future.

To be eligible for enrollment, candidates must have:

  • A Gas Safe registration number or the Gas Safe registration number of the business they’re employed by
  • National insurance number
  • Two recent colour photographs
  • Expired certificates, when available

Anyone with ACS certificates that have expired more than twelve months ago will require an Initial Assessment

Why is ACS Reassessment critical for Gas Engineers?

Holding valid ACS certificates is a requirement for any gas engineer to join or renew registration on the Gas Safe Register and carry out work.

Core qualifications (CCN1 or COCN1) need to be up to date as a requirement of Gas Safe registration renewal.

Here's the exact requirement as stated on the Gas Safe Register

“In order to renew your registration, you must have a valid core qualification – CCN1 or COCN1. You are responsible for ensuring that your qualifications are valid before you renew your registration and you must have up-to-date qualifications for the categories of work that you carry out. If no engineer assigned to your business has a core qualification, your registration will be archived.”

What does the ACS Gas Reassessment cover?

Your training and assessments will be determined by the modules for which your certificates have expired, or are expiring, depending on the categories of work you do.

ACS Reassessments combine both practical and theoretical knowledge. Certificate reassessments can be undertaken for:

  • CCN1/CPA1: Core Gas Safety
  • CENWAT 1: Central Heating Boilers
  • CPA 1: Combustion Performance Analysis
  • CKR 1: Domestic Cookers
  • HTR 1: Gas Fires and Wall Heaters
  • MET 1: Meters
  • DAH 1: Warm Air Heating Appliances

FAQs about ACS Reassessment

What happens if my ACS certificate expires and I don’t complete reassessment within twelve months?

If your ACS certificate has expired for more than twelve months, you will not be eligible for the ACS Reassessment. Instead, you will need to undergo the Initial Assessment again.

Can I complete ACS Reassessment before my current certificate expires?

Yes, you can complete your ACS Reassessment up to six months before your current certificate expires. This ensures there is no gap in your certification and helps you maintain continuous Gas Safe Registration without interruption.

Do I need to attend all five days of ACS Reassessment, or can I complete it faster?

The ACS Reassessment is structured over five days to comprehensively cover both practical skills and theoretical knowledge. While some candidates may progress through certain modules more quickly, most training centers require attendance for the full duration to ensure all assessment criteria are met and your skills are thoroughly evaluated.
