Tradespersons who have taken an electrician training course could find that they have benefited from improved working conditions thanks to a ladder exchange scheme.

The initiative, launched three years ago by the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) - which protects people against risks to health or safety arising out of work activities - aims to give industry professionals the chance to get rid of old and damaged ladders and receive money off the purchase of new ones.

According to the body, close to 7,000 old ladders have been swapped since the programme's inception and HSE chief executive Geoffrey Podger stated this shows how successful it has been.

"Every month more than 100 people fall off a ladder at work and suffer serious injuries. So many of these accidents are avoidable and having safe equipment makes a huge difference," he added.

And the scheme could well benefit the large number of top-quality electricians who are needed to carry out work at height.
