Meet the Team: Robert - Electrical Tutor

Behind the scenes at Able Skills, we couldn’t be prouder of the team we’ve built over the last two decades, bringing together some of the most brilliant trade talent the UK has to offer.
Each of our tutors is an expert in their field and hold all the required teaching and assessing awards. This means that any individual who enrols in one of our trade courses can do so with the peace of mind that they’ll be learning from the best there is.
In our Meet the Team series, we take the opportunity to shout about all the people who allow Able Skills to deliver industry-leading training every single day, delving a little deeper into their professional backgrounds and discovering what it is that inspired them to pass on their knowledge to the next generation of tradespeople.
Next up is Robert Burgess, a hugely experienced electrical engineer, teacher and as he describes himself, an “all-round top bloke”—and who are we to disagree?
Why did you want to become an Able Skills tutor?
“I really enjoy electrical engineering and also enjoy teaching people, Able Skills allowed me to fulfil both of these passions at the same time.”
What is the most rewarding part of being a tutor at Able Skills?
“Seeing people becoming more confident in their skills and succeeding.”
What are the most important things to factor in when teaching trade courses?
“That the student undertakes a suitable course that is matched to their current capabilities.”
If you could offer your students three key pieces of advice, what would they be?
“Turn up and be prepared to work. Remember you will never stop learning. Be nice”
What facilities does Able Skills offer?
Along with ensuring our team is the best we can possibly assemble, we’re also able to offer cutting-edge facilities to match. In total we have nine training centres, none of which share work areas across trades—so no stumbling over bricklayers as you try and lay water pipes.
Along with the classrooms, we’re able to offer students affordable accommodation local to our training centres, which is a popular option if you’re travelling to complete a course.
Our electrical courses
Our wide range of electrical courses cater to all levels of experience, from complete beginners to those who have been working in the industry for decades.
The City & Guilds Combined Level 2 & Level 3 Electrical Course is the perfect starting point for anyone looking to change careers to become an electrician. Through a mix of practical workshops and in-depth theory, students develop an advanced understanding of electrical practises and health and safety, along with advanced knowledge of electrical science, inspection & testing procedures, fault diagnosis, rectification and installation design. They leave with the qualifications required to work in domestic, commercial and industrial settings.
