More than 17,000 electrical companies have now signed up to be Approved Contractors with NICEIC, the independent industry standards body.

The 17,000th business was signed on to the register in December and, when that figure is combined with the number of independent domestic installers on the list, it amounts to a total of more than 26,000 operatives and companies. All of these want to have their work checked against the industry standard.

The certification director at NICEIC, Alan Wells, said that the soaring size of the register was good news for the industry and for British consumers.

“In difficult trading conditions it would be easy for firms or individuals to cut back on items such as certification,” he said. “However, it would seem firms are keen to have the quality of their work assessed and gain NICEIC certification because of the benefits it brings to their business.”

The recent merger between the Electrical Safety Council (ESC) and the Electrical Contractors’ Association (ECA) means that contractors also registering with NICEIC will be entered onto the Electrical Safety Register, which is the definitive searchable database for the industry.
