Employers in Northern Ireland have been urged to provide plumbing courses and other apprenticeships for young people across the country.

According to the Belfast Telegraph, an increase in skilled tradesmen could speed up the nation's economic recovery, as well as improve prospects for the unemployed.

Speaking at the Plumbing and Mechanical Apprentice of the Year Awards, chair of the Institute of Directors Mervyn McCall highlighted the benefits of training in developing the skills of the country's workforce.

"Apprentices [can] rise to become key members of the business, capable of delivering projects, motivating people, solving problems and negotiating contracts all over the world," he added.

Launching the awards ceremony, councillor Niall O Donnghaile stated that effective training schemes offer direct teaching and onsite training in a bid to achieve high standards.

In addition, he highlighted the importance of recognising the talents of young workers to help ensure economic growth within companies.
