Are you working as a plumber in the UK and now looking to back up your skills with a formal qualification? Below, we’ll explore the steps you can take towards gaining your plumbing NVQ and the benefits of holding a plumbing NVQ.
This is a very common scenario in the industry. In many cases, newcomers to the trade will find work as a labourer or plumber’s mate to build up their experience and job prospects before going on to gain formal qualifications.
On the flip side, many highly experienced plumbers who have worked in the industry for years don’t hold up-to-date qualifications (sometimes simply because they haven’t done any formal training), despite comfortably possessing the skills and knowledge needed to meet NVQ requirements.
Why would I need a plumbing NVQ?
Site work
One of the biggest reasons a plumber should consider completing an NVQ is that it opens the door to site work, therefore significantly boosting the scope of work you’re able to take on and potentially increasing your earning potential.
Holding an NVQ (or equivalent qualification) is a prerequisite for holding a CSCS Card (beyond trainee/labourer cards), which you’ll need before entering many construction sites in the UK.
Customer trust and employability
An NVQ is a great way for you to demonstrate your expertise as a plumber, acting as proof that your skills are competent to industry standards. Not only will employers often look for an NVQ when hiring, but potential customers will also see this as reassurance when considering your services.
Competency schemes
Competent person schemes such as the Water Industry Approved Plumbers Scheme (WIAPS) or the Association of Plumbing and Heating Contractors (APHC) will require an NVQ (or equivalent) as part of the eligibility criteria before joining.
Being part of these schemes will allow you to self-certify certain types of plumbing work, ultimately reducing the time and cost of projects. These schemes can also streamline the process of joining the WaterSafe Register, which can again boost the visibility of your services.
How do I complete my plumbing NVQ?
For those who already have experience in the industry, there are a few different pathways towards gaining your NVQ:
For beginners: Level 2 Plumbing Course
This is the industry-recognised starting point for newcomers who have little to no plumbing experience. This in-depth training course will begin with the very basics and progress to a comprehensive understanding of domestic plumbing needed to begin seeking a full-time position, and, with some experience, taking your NVQ assessment.
For plumbers already working or who have worked in the sector: Level 2 Plumbing NVQ for experienced plumbers
Are you a plumber with at least three years of experience under your belt? Rather than completing a full Level 2 course, this fast-track process allows you to achieve a Level 2 plumbing diploma, followed by work-based assessments to achieve the plumbing NVQ at Level 2.
Plumbing NVQ assessment
Once you have your Level 2 plumbing diploma and are currently working in the industry, you’ll be in a position to complete your NVQ assessment. This process will involve a qualified assessor visiting your place of work, observing you to establish competence and offering guidance for your portfolio completion.
If you’re looking to achieve both the Level 2 diploma to learn the foundations and the Level 2 NVQ to prove workplace competence, our full plumbing package creates a combined pathway, plus a WRAS certificate and G3 (to work on unvented hot water systems).
