British homeowners hoping to have gas work carried out in the near future may be encouraged to ensure they hire a tradesperson with approved gas qualifications, following the recent prosecution of a landlord.

According to the Health and Safety Executive (HSE), Mahmud Bulbulia from Dewsbury was made to pay £250 in costs and could face community service after he failed to have the boiler and cooker in one of his properties frequently checked by a Gas Safe engineer.

The body - which aims to protect people against risks to health and safety in the workplace - stated that this could have exposed his tenant to carbon monoxide poisoning or a gas explosion.

HSE inspector Kirsty Townend commented on the news by saying: "Uncertified gas appliances can kill and it's completely unacceptable that Mr Bulbulia chose to put others at serious risk - especially when he had already been warned and served with an Improvement Notice."

She added landlords must ensure gas appliances in their properties are checked and certified at least once a year.
