Regulation changes for Gas Engineers!

Here at Able Skills we teach gas courses week after week producing top quality engineers, therefore we like to keep an eye on what's going on in the industry. From July 2020, all gas engineers will need to be able to show that they have the ability to isolate the electrical supply from a gas appliance safely! According to research, it has been recognised that there can be increased danger to today’s gas engineers when working on modern installations and appliances...Due to this research it is a no-brainier that gas engineers should ensure that they and their customers are safe by undertaking electrical isolation. Today we will talk about this newly required process and how to get involved in our gas training courses as a beginner to the trade!

What do I need to know as a Gas Engineer?

Simply, gas engineers presenting themselves for an ACS assessment or re-assessment from July onward, should declare by self-validating that they have technical knowledge or experience of safe electrical isolation. If you are not confident in your ability to carry out electrical isolation then you will need to gain training on this to enable safe working practice before undertaking ACS assessments in accordance with this new regulation. By July 2025, the 5-year ACS cycle will be completed, which means that all gas engineers should have knowledge of safe electrical isolation. This change is for the better of the industry and the objective is to keep gas engineers safe at all times.

‘Safe’ to touch

Previously, due to a number of fatalities over the years, it has become common practice within the gas industry to use a single-pole or non-contact live-circuit detector, sometimes referred to as a voltage stick - before touching appliances and pipework to ensure a dangerous voltage is not present because of a fault before touching the gas equipment. However  these devices should only be used for identifying live equipment, not for proving the appliance is dead. Therefore, further appropriate tests must be used to prove equipment is electrically dead prior to undertaking work, meaning electrical isolation.
