Carpentry courses may soon see a rise in popularity, since Shed Week begins on Monday July 5th.

However, David Grievson, managing director of property development business Puddlestone, suggested checking local council rules before deciding to construct a shed in a garden.

Carpentry courses could be useful for creating such a structure, but if the building contravenes any regulations, DIY workers could find that they have to take the shed down again.

In his view, having such an item in the garden of a house may not add financial value to a property, but it can make a home easier to sell.

"I think that the new trend for this is indicative of the state of the economy and a lack of disposable income," explained Mr Grievson.

Shed Week is sponsored by Cuprinol, with the winning structure set to earn its owner a £1,000 prize and a selection of products made by the sponsoring company.
