Carpentry courses are vital for workers to maintain high standards in their profession, according to the Sheriff of the City of London.

Peter Cook made his speech at an awards ceremony honouring the work of several different categories of tradesmen in the capital.

He noted that there have been many technological developments since more than 600 years ago - when the Trade Livery Companies were first established - but it is still key to place emphasis on carpentry courses to adapt to the modern age.

"The principles of setting and maintaining standards, the training of the next generation of craftsmen are as important today as they were in yesteryear," said Mr Cook.

In his view, it would have been inconceivable for a master carpenter in the Middle Ages to imagine working alongside electricians and lightmongers, but this is what is happening in the world today.

Speaking to the Times recently, a young man who had been facing a lot of problems said he benefited from having an older mentor and recently passed a carpentry course.
