It goes without saying that for most tradespeople, a healthy spine is absolutely vital when it comes to protecting their ability to work and earn.
In a sector where a large portion of the roles are physically demanding, it’s unsurprising that construction has one of the highest levels of workplace injuries. In figures published earlier this year, the Health and Safety Executive reported more than 2,000 injuries per 100,000 workers in a 12-month period, second only to the food services sector.
Naturally, trades that require lots of heavy, repetitive lifting are at a greater risk of spinal injuries. However, it’s no less important for those who aren’t necessarily out working on sites to take proper care of themselves and their spine health.
It’s also essential that those in senior construction positions consistently take all necessary steps to create a safe working environment, protecting themselves and those working within it.
What is World Spine Day?
Coordinated by the World Federation of Chiropractic, World Spine Day seeks to raise awareness around the prevention and effective management of spinal conditions.
The day highlights the impact of spinal pain and disability, and promotes the importance of physical activity, good posture, responsible lifting and healthy working conditions.
How to look after your spine at work
Below are some of the World Spine Day advice that could be relevant for those working in construction. You can find the full list here.
- Maintain proper posture by standing and sitting up straight.
- Wear comfortable, low-heeled shoes.
- Consider a good quality backpack with padded, adjustable straps, as opposed to a briefcase or other bag.
- Lift with your knees, keep the object close to your body, and do not twist when lifting
- Avoid excessively repetitious lifting activities.
- If working at a desk, ensure that your workstation is ergonomically correct.
- Avoid padding back pockets. This can distort sitting posture and cause strains and sprains.
- Seek advice and support from a qualified health professional if your spinal pain is persistent and does not respond to usual care.
World Spine Day has also shared a ‘Straighten Up’ workout video created by the British Chiropractic Association that contains exercises designed to help improve posture.
If you are working in the construction industry and have concerns about a potentially unsafe workplace environment, then you can report it to the Health and Safety Executive (HSE). Once a report is made, the HSE will investigate, but never share your details with the business or organisation in question.
