Millions of pounds worth of funding has been set aside for the construction of new council houses - which could give industry professionals with approved electrical or plumbing qualifications employment opportunities.

It was recently revealed that some £24 million is to be allocated to supply a further 954 such properties in the country, bringing the total number delivered during 2009 to approximately 2,300.

And housing and communities minister Alex Neil commented that this is good news for a number of reasons.

"Increasing council house building will add to the record number of affordable homes being built across Scotland this year, which helps keep the economy moving by safeguarding jobs and supporting the construction industry," he said.

Many of these jobs could be for tradespersons who have taken plumber and electrician training courses, who may be needed to prepare the homes for future residents once built.

The Scottish government recently announced that it has supplied a record-breaking number of affordable homes in the country this year - increasing their provision by 71 per cent.
