Workers on electrician or plumber training courses could take inspiration from a recent project in Knottingley and try to get on an apprenticeship scheme.

According to the Yorkshire Evening Post, a recently-completed £12 million housing development in the Yorkshire town gave 45 trainees the chance to work on the project over a period of three years and gain valuable industry skills.

Marvin Ekpeh, apprentice bricklayer, told the publication: "I was without a job and not really knowing what to do. Now I feel like I have the skills to be able to follow a career in the industry."

Electricians and plumbers wanting to take a training course and gain approved qualifications may find that an apprenticeship scheme such as this could provide them with the experience they need to complement their education.

The Department for Business and Skills announced last month that it plans to create 35,000 new technician trainee places over the next two years.
