If you’re looking for construction training courses near London, choosing the right training provider is essential. Whether you want to start a new career in the trades, gain formal City & Guilds qualifications, or learn practical DIY skills, the training centre you choose can make a huge difference.

Since 2002, Able Skills has helped thousands of students learn trades such as plumbing, electrical work, carpentry, decorating, tiling, gas engineering, and bricklaying.

Who is construction training for?

Construction training can suit a wide range of people. Some students are looking to start a completely new career in the trades, while others are already working in the industry and want to gain formal qualifications or expand their skill set.

Many people also take construction courses to learn practical DIY skills so they can complete projects on their own homes or investment properties with confidence.

Here are some of the key reasons students choose Able Skills for their construction training.

6 reasons students choose Able Skills

1.      Convenient location near London

The Able Skills Construction Training centre is in Dartford, Kent. So easily accessible from London and the home counties, is near the M25, and has good transport links by train. If you’re travelling from further afield, we also have affordable accommodation if you want to stay near the centre while you’re completing your construction training course.

2.      Strong reviews and student recommendations

We often see people cite personal recommendations as one of the reasons they’ve chosen Able Skills. Perhaps they’ve had a friend or colleague train with us previously. We also know that students take time to check out reviews online while deciding which training provider to choose.

3.      Wide range of construction courses

With nine different trade training areas – electrician training courses, plumbing courses, gas engineer courses, carpentry, plastering, bricklaying, tiling, multiskills and decorating – being a City & Guilds approved centre and providing industry-standard qualifications as appropriate, we are confident that you’ll find a training course to suit your learning goal.

4.      Experienced trade instructors

All our instructors have experience within their industry before turning their talents to teaching. This real-world experience makes them experts in their chosen field, so in turn, our students gain real insight into what it’s like to do the job, from people who have done the job!

5.      Industry-standard training facilities

Each of the trade subjects has its own dedicated workshop areas. The facilities replicate as close as possible to real-world scenarios – room sets for plumbing in a bathroom, worktops to tile around, various gas appliances to work on, for example – with materials and tools and space to work independently on the necessary practical elements of the training.

6.      Flexible course availability

With courses running throughout the year, we are able to offer lots of availability. We also have the flexibility of part-time weekend courses or home study options in some of the courses.

What a typical training day looks like

Our opening hours are Monday - Friday: 08.30 - 16.30, Saturday/Sunday: 08.30 - 16.30. A typical day will depend on the course. When you arrive, you can park your car just outside the centre in our own car park and walk in. Even on your first day of the course, you can expect to get on the tools quickly.

How to choose the right training provider

It's important to do your research when choosing a construction training provider near London. Take the time to find out whether what they're offering will actually get you the training and qualification you need. Ask them how much it will cost and what's included. A visit before you commit is always a good idea, so you can see what it's like and ask any questions. Read more in our list of five key points to consider when choosing a trades training provider.

What qualifications can students earn?

The qualification that you can gain will depend on the course. We offer a wide range of construction training from beginner DIY courses, Level 1, Level 2 and Level 3 City & Guilds, plus other industry-standard trade-specific qualifications. Visit each course page to find out more or speak to a member of the team if you have a question.

Career opportunities after training

Obviously, we can never guarantee you'll find work once you've done your training. However, we do consistently get feedback from students after they complete their training, saying they've found work or gone on to do what they planned.

If you’re thinking about construction training because you're planning a career change, we’re happy to discuss a training pathway that helps you get there.

Frequently asked questions about construction training

  1. What construction courses can beginners take? We recommend our introductory courses if you're a beginner. Even if you're considering a career change, they're a great first step to give you insight into the trade to see if you enjoy the work.
  2. How long does construction training take? This depends on a few things. What trade you’re learning, the level of qualification you're looking to achieve and any existing experience you may already have. Contact us to discuss your goals and we’ll give you a realistic timescale based on your circumstances.
  3. Do construction courses provide qualifications? At Able Skills, as a City & Guilds-approved centre, we mostly offer City & Guilds qualifications and certificates. We also work with other highly recognised awarding bodies in the industry, including AIM, LCL, BPEC and NOCN.
  4. Can you learn a trade without prior experience? Yes. Many construction training courses are designed for complete beginners with no prior experience. Introductory courses allow you to learn the tools, techniques and safety practices of the trade before progressing to more advanced training or formal qualifications such as City & Guilds.
  5. Are weekend construction courses available? Many of our construction courses are also available part-time as weekend training. Some are also available as home study or modular formats for added flexibility.
