The government is reviewing the skills required to maintain a strong microgeneration sector, which may involve greater numbers of technicians signing up for electrical courses.

Worker capabilities is one of four key areas being explored by the Department of Energy and Climate Change, with the others being the quality standards aimed for, the technology required and the information offered.

Among the devices that people with electrical course training may be required to install or maintain in future are solar panels and heat pumps.

"I am planting the seeds for growth so we can see small scale energy generation flourish in homes, businesses and communities," said climate change minister Greg Barker.

He suggested the key to the consultation is to increase consumer confidence in microgeneration.

Energy and climate change secretary Chris Huhne recently highlighted how the coalition government is aiming to provide a level playing field for low-carbon technology to reform the electricity market in the UK.
