A new consultation document has been released by the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) aimed at protecting electricians and other workers who may be affected by potentially harmful artificial light.

The new directive will try to set regulations and standards across the European Union - despite UK companies generally protecting their employees well - as lasers and UV radiation can often be hazardous to electricians and other industry professionals' skin and eyes.

Judith Hackitt, chair of the HSE, commented that these steps should make a difference to a number of companies that might otherwise be endangering their tradespeople.

"These regulations will impact on a small number of at-risk businesses who use hazardous light sources as part of their work activities and who are not already protecting their workers by managing the risks," she said.

It was recently announced by the HSE that it intends to punish illegal gas workers that are not on the Gas Safe Register in court.
