Once you have completed your 10 weeks of intensive, hands on carpentry training, you will then be industry ready which is where you need to be to achieve the Carpentry NVQ.
During the entire 10 weeks, you will be trained and assessed to achieve the following:
Carpentry aspects:
Constructing studwork with opening
Constructing and installing door linings
Hanging a door
Fitting floor joists and installing floor coverings
Installing and bracing trussed rafters
Setting out and cutting a pair of common rafters
Health and Safety in construction

This entire programme will be delivered to ensure that you undertake carpentry work which is most commonly used on site; this is to prepare you for working towards achieving the level 2 NVQ. You will be guided to understand what is required as evidence to achieve the NVQ so that once you are working within the industry, the process can be completed smoothly and in an acceptable amount of time.
We will train you to provide an understanding of the following units:
QCF 641 - Conforming to General Health, Safety and Welfare in the Workplace
QCF 642 - Conforming to Productive Working Practices in the Workplace
QCF 643 - Moving, Handling and Storing Resources in the Workplace
Supported by THREE optional units from:
QCF 09Av2 - Installing First Fixing Components in the Workplace
QCF10 Av2 - Installing Second Fixing Components in the Workplace
QCF 11v2 - Erecting Structural Carcassing Components in the Workplace
QCF 12v2 - Maintaining Non-structural Carpentry Work in the Workplace
QCF 628 - Setting Up and Using Transportable Cutting and Shaping Machines in the Workplace.
To complete both Carpentry and Joinery certificates, you will engage in 10 weeks of practical training. During this time, you will compile a detailed portfolio of your work, documenting all practical carpentry assessments. This portfolio, alongside your final certification, can be presented as evidence of your skills and experience when seeking employment within the industry.
NVQs are formal Declarations of Competence and cannot be fully completed in a simulated training environment. Our course provides expert preparation for the NVQ process, equipping you with the knowledge and skills needed to succeed.
This course delivers a solid foundation, including a City & Guilds qualification, and provides a clear understanding of the steps required to progress toward an NVQ. The combination of practical training and formal qualifications prepares you for employment and further certification, opening up excellent career opportunities in carpentry.
NVQ Process
Able Skills works in partnership with CST Training, who will support you throughout the entire NVQ journey, ensuring you fully understand how to build your NVQ portfolio and gather the necessary evidence.
CST Training provides:
Multiple payment options
An online portfolio platform
An assessor induction delivered via Google Meets
Once registered, candidates will begin collecting evidence in their workplace and uploading it to the online portal, including:
Videos demonstrating on-site work (correct PPE, material handling, and trade-specific tasks)
Relevant site documentation, such as Toolbox Talks, Method Statements, and Briefings
A scheduled recorded discussion via Google Meets to complete the knowledge-based questions
A final Professional Discussion with an assessor, also via Google Meets, to conclude the NVQ process
After submission, the portfolio will undergo internal quality assurance and then be claimed with the awarding body. The final certificate will be issued by email.
Once registered for your NVQ, you may choose to obtain a CSCS Experienced Worker or Trainee card (after independently arranging and passing a CSCS test), giving you improved access to employment. When you complete the NVQ, this card can be upgraded to a Blue Skilled Worker card.
This is a fully practical course, and active participation is required throughout. Suitable clothing and steel-capped footwear are essential for your safety.
