Course details

This package of learning provides training to achieve a level 2 Diploma as well as providing an opportunity to work towards achieving NVQ level 2. The structure of this course will enable you to learn both practical and theory aspects of carpentry.

To achieve the Diploma, you will learn a variety of Carpentry skills as follows:

  • Stud walling
  • Door frames / linings
  • Hanging doors
  • All aspects of ironmongery, hinges, latches, locks etc
  • Roofing using run/rise method and Pythagoras theorem
  • Flooring including joists, trimming for openings and floorboards etc
  • Ripping of man-made materials and timber
  • Fitting of stairs including cutting over trimmer, fixing etc

In addition, you will learn various aspects of maintenance work including repairs to mouldings, doors and windows, replacing gutters, downpipes and sash cords and throughout, you will also learn how to use power tools correctly as well as setting up and using a circular saw. This particular qualification also covers areas of kitchen fitting including kitchen units, worktops and fitments.

Following this aspect of the package, you will then move on to training for achievement of NVQ. This will provide additional ‘reality’ training and ensure that you are ready for a real working environment. The aim of this period of training is to ensure that you have a full understanding of what kind of work you need to access to achieve NVQ level 2.

At the end of the course, you will receive the contact information for CST Training, who will support you through the NVQ process.

CST Training provides:

  • Flexible payment options
  • An online portfolio system
  • An assessor induction delivered via Google Meets

Once registered, you will begin gathering work-based evidence and uploading it to the online system, including:

  • Video footage demonstrating your on-site tasks (PPE use, material handling, and trade-specific activities)
  • Relevant site documentation, such as Toolbox Talks, Method Statements and Briefings
  • A scheduled recorded discussion via Google Meets to cover knowledge-based questions
  • A final Professional Discussion with an assessor, also via Google Meets, to complete the NVQ

After submission, your portfolio will go through internal quality assurance before being claimed with the awarding body. Your final certificate will be sent via email.

Once NVQ registration is complete, you may also apply for a CSCS Experienced Worker or Trainee Card (after independently booking and passing the CSCS test), improving your employment opportunities. When you achieve the NVQ, this card can then be upgraded to a Blue Skilled Worker Card.

You will be trained over a 12 week period (60 days) and the training will be predominantly practical.

This course will require a fair bit of home study commitment from you as there are also theory based assessments required in order to complete this course. At the time of booking, we will send you a home study pack as well as the associated City & Guilds reference books for the purpose of study and revision. In addition, we will also allocate you a Smartscreen account which is an additional learning resource. When you are ready to book your time in centre, we will expect you to have completed a fair amount of the home study pack – you will be unable to complete units unless the theory aspects have been undertaken.

The qualification is broken down in to specific units and the assessments vary according to the unit you are undertaking, however you can expect to have practical assessments, online exams and written exams across the following:

  • Health, safety and welfare in construction
  • Principles of building construction, information and communication
  • Carry out first fix flooring and roofing
  • Carry out first fix frames, partitions and stairs
  • Carry out second fixing operations
  • Carry out carpentry maintenance
  • Set up and operate a circular saw

We will provide guidance on sources of reference that we recommend that you use in order to gain as much additional information as you can which will only serve to heighten your understanding of the carpentry units that you will be completing on the course with us.

You’ll have full access to all facilities within our spacious, double-sized carpentry workshop, along with support from three dedicated instructors. They will guide you through practical sessions designed to help you progress confidently through both the qualification and the NVQ preparation. We’ll also supply all the necessary reference materials to support your learning and reinforce your understanding throughout the course.

Because NVQs are competency-based qualifications, they must be completed in a real working environment—not a simulated one. Our role is to ensure you are thoroughly prepared for this, and we take great pride in delivering training that equips you for genuine workplace expectations.
