By the end of the course, you’ll have the confidence and ability to secure work in carpentry and start gathering the evidence needed to achieve your NVQ.

The aim of this course is to equip you with a City & Guilds certificate and a solid understanding of the NVQ process. This combination of practical experience and qualification support gives you an excellent foundation to enter the workforce and progress towards further professional certifications.

NVQs are formal Declarations of Competence and cannot be fully completed in a simulated training environment. Our course provides expert preparation for the NVQ process, equipping you with the knowledge and skills needed to succeed.

This course delivers a solid foundation, including a City & Guilds qualification, and provides a clear understanding of the steps required to progress toward an NVQ. The combination of practical training and formal qualifications prepares you for employment and further certification, opening up excellent career opportunities in carpentry.

NVQ Process

Able Skills works in partnership with CST Training, who will support you throughout the entire NVQ journey, ensuring you fully understand how to build your NVQ portfolio and gather the necessary evidence.

CST Training provides:

  • Multiple payment options
  • An online portfolio platform
  • An assessor induction delivered via Google Meets

Once registered, candidates will begin collecting evidence in their workplace and uploading it to the online portal, including:

  • Videos demonstrating on-site work (correct PPE, material handling, and trade-specific tasks)
  • Relevant site documentation, such as Toolbox Talks, Method Statements, and Briefings
  • A scheduled recorded discussion via Google Meets to complete the knowledge-based questions
  • A final Professional Discussion with an assessor, also via Google Meets, to conclude the NVQ process

After submission, the portfolio will undergo internal quality assurance and then be claimed with the awarding body. The final certificate will be issued by email.

Once registered for your NVQ, you may choose to obtain a CSCS Experienced Worker or Trainee card (after independently arranging and passing a CSCS test), giving you improved access to employment. When you complete the NVQ, this card can be upgraded to a Blue Skilled Worker card.

This is a fully practical course, and active participation is required throughout. Suitable clothing and steel-capped footwear are essential for your safety.
