
Able Skills has devised a number of discounted training packages in an attempt to cater for everyone considering a career in Tiling. Any of the packages we provide can be completed in time frames to suit most individuals with weekend training also being available.
This particular 4 week training programme will provide you with 4 certificates including a City & Guilds Unit Accreditation.
The training will see you learn tiling from scratch before moving on to more advanced and complex tiling, undertaking an assessment to show the level of competence you have achieved, supported by a City & Guilds Certificate and learning how to tile beautifully using Natural Stone products.
Our 4 week course is entirely hands on with excellent support and tuition from your Instructors who will also provide guidance and advice on quoting for jobs, how to measure up jobs (floors/walls) and how to set out a quote.
As part of this package, we will also provide you with our instructional Tiling DVD which will provide you with additional support during your training and can be used for reference when you have finished
Throughout the 4 weeks of tiling training, we will demonstrate how to deal with any difficult areas you may come across like pipes, sockets, angled ceilings, uneven walls, tiling around a toilet system, windows, basins, baths, radiators etc.
We will also teach you how to complete different aspects of tiling including borders, diamond and brickwork patterns; we will also incorporate the use of different sized and shaped materials including mosaics, slate, marble etc.
You will be taught the correct procedure to remove and replace damaged existing tiles with new tiles and work on building speed and precision. Our tiling course also includes training on how to lay electric under-floor heating. An assessment on week 3 will help you to see how much you have learned and we are confident that you will be amazed at your skill level.

Able Skills has their own accommodation available at £20 per night for those of you who are travelling longer distances to train with us.
Throughout the 4 weeks of tiling training, we will also cover health and safety, which tools are essentially required, which tool to use for each job, how much they cost, general maintenance and how often they need replacing etc.
We are keen to ensure that once you have finished your tiling training that you have a comprehensive understanding of what tools and other items you will need to be fully equipped to start your tiling work.
Week 1 will teach you tiling basics, starting from scratch you will learn how to tile both wall and floor areas and gain a complete understanding of the requirements for any area you are planning to tile.
• Setting out your tiling work.
• Explaining all the different adhesives used for different surfaces.
• Demonstrating all the tools required.
• Cutting tiles using wet tile cutters, dry tile cutters, tile scribes, tile snips and tile saws.
• Explaining tiling involving Borders, Diamonds and Patterns.
• How to cut around windows and reveals.
• How to cope with tiling difficult areas such as uneven walls.
• How to tile angled ceilings and socket areas.
• How to tile splash-backs.
• How to tile around boxed in pipes.
You will work in an area equipped with sanitary ware so you will learn how to cut around obstacles such as WCs and pedestals using quality tools such as RUBI cutters. You will also be shown how to grout and finish to a high standard and how to use silicone sealants.
Week 2 is an advanced training week, providing you with the skills to tackle more complex areas and giving you the opportunity to build on your speed, technique and confidence.
• How to prepare a quote
• How to cope with more difficult obstacles such as pipes for shower attachments and toilet wastes
• Tiling behind existing sink pedestals
• Behind radiators
• Tiling around sockets
• Building speed and precision
• Incorporating different materials including mosaics
• Patterns including diamond pattern
• Correct procedure to remove and replace damaged existing tiles with new tiles
• Estimate tile quantities required for each individual job
• Explain and demonstrate how to lay and fit under-floor heating
Week 3 is an assessment of your skills for which successful candidates will receive a City & Guilds certificate and portfolio detailing the work done. This can be very useful to show prospective clients when you are providing quotes or tenders.
• Prepare floor and wall to receive tiles.
• Fix Straight edge and check for level.
• Apply adhesives.
• Fix tiles.
• Apply Grouting.
• Clean tools, equipment.
• State the health & safety implications of using powdered materials and ready mixed adhesives.
• State the need for use of PPE and SSOW
• Give reasons for levels and straight edges.
• Identify types of tiles.
• Give reasons for grouting.
• Give reasons for gaps when applying tiles.
• State the need for a clean and tidy work area.
This week of tiling training will teach you how to tile with 4” x 4” Natural Tumbled Marble and 12” x 12” Natural Slate. You will learn how to seal natural stone, understand required adhesives and be aware of how to enhance the stones natural features.
During this course we will cover:
• How to prepare the wall and floor areas to receive natural stone products
• Measure areas to calculate quantities required
• Prep areas
• Select and grade natural stone products
• How to overcome the uneven thickness of the tile when laying it onto a floor.
• Mix appropriate adhesives
• Cutting the stone where necessary
• Ensuring (with your instructors help) that you are working to a domestic and commercial standard of finish whilst also working clean and safe.
• Receive a demonstration on how and why you need to seal the products prior to grouting
• Seal the tiled area
• Grout your completed installation
• Clean as necessary prior to applying a necessary 2nd coat of seal
Throughout the week your instructors will explain to you the characteristics of natural stone products and how they differ from ceramic and porcelain products, they will make you fully aware of how these items of material should be handled before, during and after installation.
If you are planning a career long term, are looking to start a Tiling business or are maybe considering a route to NVQ, Able Skills also offers you the opportunity to train for 6 weeks or 8 weeks.
These longer training plans delve that much deeper into tiling and give you the opportunity to use various different products: Porcelain, Ceramics, Slate, Marble, Mosaics etc and at Able Skills, we have managed to establish a regular supply of different sized and shaped products to give you the opportunity to sample a much broader range of tile.
