Welcome to Able Skills 8 Week Complete Tiling Package

Able Skills has devised an 8 week tiling package which incorporates a variety of our tiling courses which will cover various Tiling techniques to prepare you for the Tiling industry and progression to NVQ. This tiling course will cover standard domestic tiling requirements but will also incorporate techniques to deal with wet rooms and showers and additionally, geometric tiling for the purposes of specialist or decorative projects. We also feel that you would benefit from having a very good understanding of how to prepare all backgrounds before tiling and so we have also incorporated plastering and rendering training.

Able Skills dedicated Tiling Training Centre has the facilities in place to teach basic, precision and complex tiling techniques, so much so that we are confident that if you look to commit to 8 weeks with us, we will have you tiling to extreme complexity. We are confident that our staff and facilities can get you to undertake the most difficult of tasks with total confidence.

This 8 week tiling course will take you through all the stages of tiling, gradually building your skills from that of a novice to a competent Tiler with the skills to undertake any tiling project. We are looking to cover as much about Tiling and everything associated with it as we can; preparing you for every eventual scenario you may come up against.

Our instructors are all time served, qualified Tilers but also have the added advantage of having teaching and assessing qualifications. This ensures that the standard and quality of training will be the best that you can have and that you will have the benefit of being taught by the best that there is. Able Skills instructors are keen to pass on their knowledge and have themselves developed this package as they feel that these areas of training will be the most beneficial for your future career as a Tiler.

As you progress through the stages of this course, we will cover aspects of tiling as basic as the use of standard 6” white ceramic tiles, right through to tiling with mosaics and eventually laying something as complex as Victorian pathways. There will be a huge emphasis throughout on cleanliness, health and safety and PPE and we will also demonstrate how to quote for jobs and how to place orders for materials etc. All of this additional course information will prove to be very useful if and when you decide to enhance your skills and undertake the NVQ process.

Throughout the duration of your tiling courses, you will be:

given advice on quoting for jobs
taught how to measure up the job (floors/walls)
how to set out a quote

We will also cover all aspects of:

health and safety
which tools are required
what tool to use for each job, what they cost, how often they need replacing and general maintenance etc.

We will also explain and demonstrate in detail:

which adhesives are to be used for different surfaces
how much they cost and
calculation of coverage areas.

You will be shown how to:

tile in straight and diagonal layouts
how to set out a job for general floors,
for kitchen and bathroom walls, large and small
we will include theory, marking out and cutting around difficult objects.

We will teach you how to deal with any difficult areas you may come across like:

Pipes
Sockets
Angled ceilings
Uneven walls,
Tiling around a toilet system, window, basin, bath, radiators etc.

Tiling using Natural Stone

You will also learn specialist tiling using natural stone, marble, slate etc.
This course will teach you how to tile with natural tumbled marble. You will learn how to seal natural stone, understand required adhesives and be aware of how to enhance the stones natural features.
You will also be shown how to lay natural slate tile and be taught how to overcome uneven thickness of the tile when laying it onto a floor.

Showers and Wet Rooms

As you progress through the weeks of training we will also teach you how to apply tanking to shower areas and install 4” tiles to shower cubicles, we will also cover installation of an Aquapanel to a wet area which you will then prepare and tile. We will cover floor screeding, teaching you how to prepare an uneven floor by applying a sand and cement screed to provide you with a perfect floor surface to tile. Frequently you may come across floor areas which may be slightly out of level, to combat this and allow for a perfect surface for tiling, we will also explain and demonstrate how and when to use self levelling compound.

Preparing backgrounds

If you want to be able to offer a full and valuable service you will need to appreciate that not all tiling surfaces are ready for you to tile on. As a result, we have incorporated some plastering and rendering training into this package. This will enhance your portfolio of skills and ensure that you do not need to call in and rely on anyone else to complete that particular job.

Geometrical Tiling

There may be times in your career as a tiler whereby you will be asked to undertake specialist tiling projects. It may be that some one has an older property and they would like a Victorian path or hallway laid or it maybe that the property has arched areas which require tiling. To help you through these unusual requests, we will dedicate a week to supporting you through complex tiling with intricate cuts to produce beautiful finishes and work which you can be proud of.

Finally………….

In your final week you will work to a specification in a fully fitted kitchen or bathroom area. You will come across all of the problems a professional Tiler comes across when undertaking various jobs. You will be expected to complete the project with little supervision, demonstrating everything you have learned in the previous 7 weeks. You will be assessed on your completed work and the assessment will also be based upon your ability to:

calculate materials required to complete the job,
the attention paid to working cleanly,
working methodically and
your awareness of health and safety.

We will be looking to ensure that you have produced a finished product that any paying customer would be happy with.

With 8 weeks of constant tiling under your belt you will be ready for anything. The atmosphere at Able Skills Tiling Training Centre is fantastic and encouraging. The business of the Centre can reflect reality very well and this adds to the Centres appeal. You will be able to witness all areas of tiling being undertaken around you and having committed to an 8 week package, you will be able to see exactly what is in store for you.

You will not find training to this extent and quality anywhere else in the Country. We are completely geared up for 2010 and with our approval as an NVQ assessment Centre, we can also help you gain the qualifications which states that you are a competent, qualified and professional Tiler.

Throughout the tiling training we will arrange for representatives from both BAL (Building Adhesives Ltd) and RUBI (Tiling tools) to provide product demonstrations. These have so far proved very popular with Tiling trainees and can provide you with invaluable advice for the future.

Throughout your training we recommend suitable clothing and for your own safety, protective footwear is essential. We will provide all tools and materials throughout the 8 weeks from RUBI tiling tools to learn with to Tile Magic stationary in which to store your paper work.

We are also able to offer you RUBI tiling tools with a competitive discount should you want tools to start work with immediately.

Progression to NVQ

Throughout the 8 weeks you will be building a portfolio containing photographic evidence and certificates. This will be good practice for you should you make the decision to register with Able Skills to work towards gaining an NVQ. We will provide you with all the advise, guidance and support required to help you gather evidence of your tiling competencies to submit to an Assessor for NVQ recommendation. There will be no requirement to visit you at your place of work as all the portfolio evidence you gather will have to be verified anyway. We will be looking for you to gain photographic evidence of work you are undertaking along with quotes, drawings, estimates, job references and letters from customers relating to the work you have undertaken. This ongoing evidence and information will be encouraging as you witness the improvement in your abilities and it also enables you to see your own progression. When your portfolio is complete, Able Skills approved assessors will look over your evidence and assess your portfolio in keeping with the NVQ code of practice.

Course Timings

This 8 week tiling course package can be completed in a time frame to suit you. Weekend training is available for the first 2 parts of this course and possibly the plastering aspects but the City & Guilds aspect will require a full 5 days due to the assessment process, the same applies to the training using Natural Stone, Geometric tiling, tanking, floor screeding and assessment weeks. If you choose to cover the entire package on a Monday – Friday basis, you can split the weeks up to fit in with your ongoing commitments.

Able Skills has secured CAA approval and can also offer the Intermediate Construction Award Level 2 in Wall and Floor tiling. This will require 6 weeks of training including CSCS card training and exam enabling you to enter the industry immediately. At the end of your 8 weeks of training, we can provide you with a pack offering guidance on starting your own tiling business. This will include advice on business bank accounts, public liability insurance, printing for Business cards, Account forms, website design etc. Able Skills works very closely with Tile Magic and anybody who has completed training with us will be able to open an account with Tile Magic at any of their branches throughout the UK.

When your new Tiling business is up and running you should be inundated with work, all of which could be suitable evidence for NVQ assessment.
