Able Skills is an NVQ Assessment Centre

Able Skills dedicated Tiling Centre has all of the facilities you will find once you are working within the Tiling industry. We do have standard perfect bays like other Centres although ours are a lot bigger!, we use these to start you off with and take you through your first steps in learning to tile. In addition, we also have fully fitted bathroom and kitchen areas within our Tiling Centre which will allow you to deal with reality as you become more confident and progress through the weeks on this Tiling course.

We also have shower cubicles, columns, steps, arches and much more. Able Skills facilities are second to none; we have the largest Tiling Training Centre in the UK and have designed it to cater for every kind of Tiler, whether you want a 5 day course or if you want a professional Tilers course or even qualifications, Able Skills can cater for everyone.

In addition, we have the staff and processes in place to move you forward to gain an NVQ. At the end of your 6 weeks training if you choose, you can register with Able Skills and immediately be working towards gaining your NVQ. We feel that this is the recommended minimum training time required to enable you to be a proficient tiler and a suitable NVQ candidate.

Training required to complete this Professional Tiling course will take place in full at Able Skills dedicated Tiling Centre. As an approved training provider, you can be assured that all facilities in place meet industry standards and adhere to City & Guilds and Construction Awards Alliance requirements. Our full time Tiling Instructors at Able Skills are all time served tradesmen, qualified to NVQ levels and additionally, have teaching and assessing qualifications as well as the required qualification for the purposes of internal verification.

We highly recommend that you consider the quality of the tiling training centre you choose. If a training facility has the approval to deliver qualifications then this confirms the high standard of training available across all of their courses. We have devised this tiling programme to reflect reality in the best way possible, we will attempt to cover every eventuality to the best of our ability to ensure that once you start working as a Tiler, nothing comes as too much of a surprise. With the knowledge and skills achieved by attending Able Skills tiling courses, we believe that you will start out as a competent Tiler and become better skilled as years progress and you spend time on the jobs you undertake.
All of our Tiling courses are entirely hands on with excellent support and tuition provided throughout the entire time spent with us.

Throughout the duration of your course, you will be:

given advice on quoting for jobs
taught how to measure up the job (floors/walls)
how to set out a quote

We will also cover all aspects of:

health and safety
which tools are required
what tool to use for each job, what they cost, how often they need replacing and general maintenance etc.

We will also explain and demonstrate in detail:

which adhesives are to be used for different surfaces
how much they cost and
calculation of coverage areas.

You will be shown how to:

tile in straight and diagonal layouts
how to set out a job for general floors,
for kitchen and bathroom walls, large and small
we will include theory, marking out and cutting around difficult objects.

We will teach you how to deal with any difficult areas you may come across like:

Pipes
Sockets
Angled ceilings
Uneven walls,
Tiling around a toilet system, window, basin, bath, radiators etc.

Tiling using Natural Stone

You will also learn specialist tiling using natural stone, marble, slate etc.

This course will teach you how to tile with natural tumbled marble. You will learn how to seal natural stone, understand required adhesives and be aware of how to enhance the stones natural features.
You will also be shown how to lay natural slate tile and be taught how to overcome uneven thickness of the tile when laying it onto a floor.

Showers and Wet Rooms

As you progress through the weeks of training we will also teach you how to apply tanking to shower areas and install 4” tiles to shower cubicles, we will also cover installation of an Aquapanel to a wet area which you will then prepare and tile. We will cover floor screeding, teaching you how to prepare an uneven floor by applying a sand and cement screed to provide you with a perfect floor surface to tile.

Finally………….

In your final week you will work to a specification in a fully fitted kitchen or bathroom area. You will come across all of the problems a professional Tiler comes across when undertaking various jobs. You will be expected to complete the project with little supervision, demonstrating everything you have learned in the previous 5 weeks. You will be assessed on your completed work and the assessment will also be based upon your ability to:

calculate materials required to complete the job,
the attention paid to working cleanly,
working methodically and
your awareness of health and safety.

We will be looking to ensure that you have produced a finished product that any paying customer would be happy with.

We will also provide you with all of the documentation required covering site health and safety. This information will support you if you decide to sit for a Health and Safety test in order to gain a CSCS card allowing you access to sites.

This Professional Tiling Course will provide you with a portfolio and 6 certificates including a City & Guilds Unit Accreditation.

Progression to NVQ

Throughout the 6 weeks you will be building a portfolio containing photographic evidence and certificates. This will be good practice for you should you make the decision to register with Able Skills to work towards gaining an NVQ. We will provide you with all the advise, guidance and support required to help you gather evidence of your tiling competencies to submit to an Assessor for NVQ recommendation. There will be no requirement to visit you at your place of work as all the portfolio evidence you gather will have to be verified anyway. We will be looking for you to gain photographic evidence of work you are undertaking along with quotes, drawings, estimates, job references and letters from customers relating to the work you have undertaken. This ongoing evidence and information will be encouraging as you witness the improvement in your abilities and it also enables you to see your own progression. When your portfolio is complete, Able Skills approved assessors will look over your evidence and assess your portfolio in keeping with the NVQ code of practice.

Course Timings

This 6 week tiling course package can be completed in a time frame to suit you. Weekend training is available for the first 2 parts of this course but the City & Guilds aspect will require a full 5 days due to the assessment process, the same applies to the training using Natural Stone, tanking, floor screeding and assessment weeks. If you choose to cover the entire package on a Monday – Friday basis, you can split the weeks up to fit in with your ongoing commitments.

Able Skills has secured CAA approval and can also offer the Intermediate Construction Award Level 2 in Wall and Floor tiling. This will require 6 weeks of training including CSCS card training and exam enabling you to enter the industry immediately. At the end of your 6 weeks of training, we can provide you with a pack offering guidance on starting your own tiling business. This will include advice on business bank accounts, public liability insurance, printing for Business cards, Account forms, website design etc. Able Skills works very closely with Tile Magic and anybody who has completed training with us will be able to open an account with Tile Magic at any of their branches throughout the UK.

When your new Tiling business is up and running you should be inundated with work, all of which could be suitable evidence for NVQ assessment.
