Why the construction skills shortage is good news for you

In the construction industry, we’ve not been able to get away from the news about the skills crisis and skills shortages in recent years. While headlines focus on workforce and skill gaps, if you’re considering construction as a new career, the news is actually good news. The construction industry is expanding and with it so is the demand for skilled workers. For adults considering a fresh start, construction now offers some of the most accessible routes into a new, rewarding career.

The 2025 City & Guilds Foundations for the Future report estimates that over 160,000 new workers are needed in the industry to meet the growing demand. That’s equivalent to a 30% increase in the workforce, with over 160,000 skilled roles to be filled in the coming years.

A construction industry full of opportunity

Construction is an industry that offers long term stability and job security, both now and in the future.

Looking ahead at an industry level, the current government has big plans for investment in housing and infrastructure, creating long-term opportunities in the sector.

At a career level, the construction industry has always offered an advancing career path, from new entrant levels up to management and beyond. However, the growing demand for skilled workers and the call for green skills has introduced even more opportunities.

As for what the future holds for each job, the sector remains fairly resilient to the threat from AI. While it’s undoubtedly being put to good use in certain areas, there is no replacement for the hands-on roles due to the very nature of construction work.

How career changers can build a future in construction

We typically think of a career in construction starting at school-leaving age, particularly trade apprenticeships. If you’ve ever considered it as a career change, you might be surprised to find out that it’s an industry where transferable skills complement industry qualifications.

The demand for workers that we’re currently experiencing means that regardless of your work background, it offers opportunities for retraining into a new career. Whether you’re coming from a career in logistics or project management, retail or customer service, admin or accounting, with flexible and accessible training, it’s possible to make the change.
