Introducing the Domestic Electrical Level 3, the NVQ for Domestic Installers with Able Skills
We’re pleased to include a Level 3 Electrotechnical in Dwellings Experienced Worker qualification in our range of electrician training courses and qualifications.
What is the NVQ for Domestic Installers?
The NVQ for Domestic Installers at Able Skills is a route to achieving a Level 3 NVQ if you already have at least three years’ experience working as a practising domestic electrician.
The qualification is a City & Guilds 2347-03, referred to as either 2347-03 EWA Domestic Installer or 2347-03 NVQ (Level 3 Electrotechnical in Dwellings Experienced Worker Assessment (EWA)) qualification.
Why electricians need a Level 3 NVQ
Electricians who hold an EWA Domestic Installer qualification and the AM2ED meet the criteria to apply for an ECS Domestic Electrician Gold Card. It’s also recognised as being equivalent to an industry apprenticeship in Electrotechnical Assessment Specification.
Who is the Experienced Worker Assessment (EWA) Domestic Installer suitable for?
This qualification is suitable for existing electricians who hold a recognised Level 2 qualification in electrical installation. Electricians can be employed or self-employed and must have been working for three years but not yet holding an equivalent Level 3 NVQ qualification.
The qualification is not suitable for new entrants to the electrotechnical industry, or for apprentices. It’s also not suitable for electricians who have less than three years’ relevant experience as a domestic electrician, even if they hold a Level 2 qualification.
Entry requirements for Level 3 Electrotechnical in Dwellings EWA qualification
You’ll need to have at least three years’ experience and hold a recognised Level 2 qualification. These three years can’t include any time spent in training, whether you did that either full or part-time alongside work.
To be eligible for the EWA route, you’ll also need to ensure that you’ve covered the correct type of electrical installation work – we’ll provide you with a skills scan so you can check.
How to enrol in NVQ for Domestic Installers
Given the detailed specific eligibility criteria for the City & Guilds 2347-03, if you are interested in pursuing an NVQ via the EWA route, please call us on 01322 280202 in the first instance.
Once you have contacted us, we ask you to fill in a Skills Scan and Candidate Background form – this is to help us determine your eligibility for this route.
If eligible, we will issue you with an assessment pack. This includes witness testimonies and a letter of reference from your current employer (where applicable).
Once these documents are returned to us, the next step is coming to Able Skills for a profiling session with one of our Electrical NVQ Assessors. At this point, we’ll provide more guidance on achieving the NVQ.
What happens next?
There’s an 18-month registration period that’s allocated when you enrol. This gives you time to complete the Domestic Electrical NVQ Level 3.
For the practical units, you’ll gather evidence that demonstrates your knowledge, understanding and competence to the standard of the Level 3 electrotechnical apprenticeship. You can only use evidence that’s generated after you enrol on the EWA. Click here to see a list of the Level 3 performance units you’ll be assessed on.
An Able Skills Assessor will come to your place of work to assess you when you are ready and the AM2ED aspect can be completed in 3 days but only when all other aspects of the NVQ are complete.
To achieve the NVQ (C&G 2347-03) in full, you will also need to have:
- City & Guilds 2382
- Level 3 Inspection & Testing C&G 2391-52
- AM2ED
- 18th Edition
What are the options without a Level 2?
If you do not hold the required Level 2, there’s a different fast-track option at Able Skills specifically for individuals who have five years’ experience or more – the City & Guilds 2365-02 – Experienced Worker - Fast Track.
If you don’t yet have five years in industry, why not consider doing the City & Guilds Level 2 Electrical Course?
