Course details

To progress onto the NVQ Level 3 via the Experienced Worker Assessment (EWA – C&G 2346-03), you must be able to demonstrate at least five years’ experience working in commercial or industrial electrical environments, along with a Level 2 Electrical Installation qualification.

If you do not hold a Level 2 qualification, you can instead complete the Experienced Worker Entrance Test (C&G 2346-04).

This test is specifically designed for experienced electricians who need to demonstrate their underpinning technical knowledge in order to progress onto the Level 3 Electrotechnical Experienced Worker Assessment (EWA) route, without completing a Level 2 qualification. It offers a recognised way to validate your existing skills and knowledge.

To be accepted onto the test, you must meet the required experience criteria, which will be assessed through a Skills Scan provided by Able Skills.

A sample test is available to help you prepare before sitting the online examination.

This test enables eligible candidates to demonstrate that they have the required technical knowledge and understanding to progress onto the Level 3 Electrotechnical Experienced Worker NVQ.

The test covers

  • Core knowledge required for safe and effective electrical work
  • Application of relevant legislation in the workplace
  • Maintaining safe working practices and environments
  • Identifying and managing hazards

You will also need an understanding of:

  • Preparing for the installation of wiring systems
  • Following correct electrical installation practices
  • Know the characteristics of supply systems, consumer equipment, earthing, and protection

The test also includes:

  • The basics of electrical principles
  • The effect of different properties on circuits
  • Operation of electrical components

In addition, you will be expected to demonstrate knowledge of wiring applications, electrical systems, and the design process, along with safe isolation, testing, and commissioning procedures. You must also be able to apply BS 7671 and use the IET On-Site Guide to ensure installations meet current safety and regulatory standards.

Important to note: Once registered, your exam booking is valid for 30 days. Within this period, you may attempt the test and, if required, take up to two resits.

If you do not pass within the 30-day window, you must wait 12 months before attempting the test again. After this period, you will need to re-register before retaking the assessment.

If you choose not to take this exam or are unsuccessful and prefer not to wait 12 months to reapply, an alternative option is available.

You can instead complete the City & Guilds Level 2 qualification through the Experienced Worker route: City & Guilds Level 2 - Experienced Worker route
