With the introduction to a change in the building regulations came the need by law, for most electrical work in domestic dwellings to be notified to the local authority building control. The exception to this is where the work is undertaken by a competent person who is a member of a Governing body and is registered onto a Part P Scheme.
A competent person is someone who is approved by one of the governing bodies approved by the Office of the Deputy Prime Minister, this is known as the Part P Scheme; the scheme does require that you can prove competency, and upon registering onto a scheme, you will be assessed by the governing body you choose.
To register onto a Part P scheme you are required to have knowledge of domestic installations and a relevant qualification which determines that you are competent and able to safely work on electrical equipment in the home.
Persons registered with the Part P Self-Certification Schemes will be qualified with the ability to thoroughly check a circuit for safety. They are required to issue an Electrical Installation Certificate that complies with Building Regulation requirements when the work has been completed.
Able Skills has experienced an increase in the number of people seeking to become Part P competent and to meet the demand, we have a dedicated Domestic Installation training centre. This centre provides classroom facilities for the theory aspect of this Part P assessment process and has spacious workshop training bays so that practical tasks and assessments can be undertaken to complete the process.
Candidates are provided with an EAL candidate pack to work through the assessments under the guidance of our instructors and all materials and tools, including a vast array of testing equipment, are provided to enable the practical training and assessment to run smoothly. Protective footwear is mandatory for all workshop activities.
If you have entered onto this Part P assessment course without having attended Able Skills Electrical Introductory course, you must be sure that you are completely proficient in all aspects of a domestic installation including the ability to undertake and record testing procedures competently.
This Part P course is not designed to teach domestic installations, it is designed to assess your ability to undertake such work safely.
Able Skills is open 7 days every week and we welcome visitors at all times. Please feel free to come along to view our facilities, have an informal chat with any one of our instructors and meet existing students.
We feel that this is an excellent introduction for anyone looking to invest in training and this option will help you decide if Able Skills is where you want to train.

Most individuals whether they be new entrants, time served electricians or those who now do electrical work as a small part of their activities opt for this course. The aim of the EAL VRQ Level 2 is to provide a much-needed qualification for the domestic electrical industry and introduce candidates to an essential range of skills.
The objective of the award is to ensure that the industry has an appropriate qualification to encourage candidates into the domestic electrical industry.
This EAL VRQ Level 2 covers the necessary skills needed by those looking at changing careers to enter the domestic electrical sector and provides progression opportunities both to employment and to a range of other qualifications
The EAL Domestic Installer Scheme for Part P is a modular qualification comprising of 9 Units.
The assessment of this qualification has two aspects:
1. External Assessment is a multi-choice examination written by EAL
2. Internal Assessment which comprises a series of practical and/or knowledge tasks.
An assessor/course tutor will mark internal assessments and a sample of these will be internally verified by an individual responsible for the quality assurance of the qualification.
Candidates must pass both the external assessment and demonstrate adequate skills in the internal assessment components to achieve the qualification. Successful completion of both components will enable you to register as a Part P Installer.
The awarding body of this VRQ has worked closely with industry, colleges and training providers to ensure that the course content and assessments are pitched at the correct level and meet the needs of both candidates and industry.
The internal assessments have been designed to test either practical skills or knowledge which is why it is essential that you are competent in the following areas:
1. Electrical Safety legislation, regulations standards and terminology
2. Safe isolation procedures
3. Identification of unsafe electrical situations
4. Earthing and bonding requirements
5. Electrical test procedures
6. Cable and component selection
7. Installation and replacement of electrical components
8. Checking the correct and safe operation of installed electrical components
9. Recording of electrical test results and completion of certification
10. Installing and/or rerouting cables
11. Special Locations
12. New circuit requirements
13. Lighting installations
14. Maintenance
15. Supplies
If you feel that you are lacking in some or all areas, you will need to consider undertaking introductory training which is available at Able Skills by way of a 5 day course.
To achieve Level 2 Certificate for Domestic Installers candidates must successfully complete 9 mandatory units.
