Throughout the Pandemic, lots of people have been thinking about their career choices that have lead them to where they are now. For some, it has meant they have had a change of role and for others, it has meant they have changed industry completely! A prime example of this would be James, who has been working in the Drinks Industry for over 25 years. After this long James decided it was time for a change and is here with us at Able Skills to re-train as a tiler.

Why Did You Want To Do This Course And Why Able Skills?

“Able Skills provided the correct course and qualification for what I wanted to achieve. In addition to this, I did my research on the website and saw all the positive reviews that were left there and thought the centre would be a perfect fit for me.”

James came to us to re-train with the aim of becoming a Tiler. He has just finished his Level 2 NVQ Course with us and will now head out into the industry where he will look to display his newly learned skills. We also post regular content onto our social media platforms where anyone who is interested in our courses can see what our students get up to with us at Able Skills.

An example of some of the work James completed on week 8 of his NVQ.

What Is Your End Goal With This Training?

“The end goal for me is to one day be self-employed and to be in control of my own destiny because I have spent so long working in a corporate job where things weren’t up to me. As well as this, it will open up loads of doors because there is a shortage of qualified Tilers in the industry at the moment”

Here at Able Skills we often welcome students that are looking to become self-employed, after years of working repetitive 9-5 office jobs. In addition to this as James mentioned above there may never be a better time than right now to start up your own company due to the skills shortage that the UK finds itself in currently.

What Advice Would You Give To Someone Else In A Similar Situation To You?

“I was thinking about doing this 2 years ago and should have done it then. But I waited until Covid-19 hit and even though it was a late decision it was a brilliant one!”

This is understandable, making the jump from a steady office role to becoming self-employed is hard, and often takes a lot of time to consider all the variables. Some people may have loved ones to support, bills to pay and now may not be the right time. But if you are sure now is the right time then Able Skills is the place for you.

How Have You Found The Instructors At Able Skills?

“The instructors have been amazing, their knowledge of the industry has really helped me through the course. I also loved the structure of the course, I was always taking what I learned from one week into the next week and this has kept all the knowledge fresh.”

All of our Tiling Instructors are highly skilled. They have years of experience in the industry as well as in teaching. As James mentioned they are more than happy to share their knowledge with all of the students so that you can make the most of your experience.
