Learning plastering at Able Skills

Whether you want to take your first steps towards a new career, or just want to learn some valuable DIY skills that’ll come in handy around the house, an introductory construction course is a great way to get to grips with the basics of a trade.

Accredited by City & Guilds, the Introduction to Plastering course is a comprehensive entry-point ideal for anyone wanting to learn basic plastering skills.

What is covered in the course?

Throughout this short five-day intensive course, participants learn the basic elements of plastering, this includes:

  • Health & Safety
  • PPE
  • How to cut and fix plasterboard to walls and ceilings
  • How to tape standard and internal joints
  • How to cut and fix angle beads around windows and reveals
  • How to prepare surfaces before plastering
  • How to mix plastering materials
  • How to skim walls and ceilings
  • How to apply PVA adhesive Unibond to existing surfaces

How is the course taught?

The course is entirely workshop-based, and students learn in a hands-on fashion under the guidance of an expert plastering instructor.

Those enrolling in the course have the choice to complete the five days consecutively or across two successive weekends. If you choose the weekend option, course content will be adjusted to account for the day that is lost.

What experience is needed before enrolling?

As the Introduction to Plastering course is aimed at complete beginners, no prior experience is needed.

Who is the course suitable for?

The course is an ideal starting point for anyone who may be considering a career as a professional plasterer or decorator. It’s also suitable for anyone who wants to learn basic DIY plastering skills that they can use for personal projects or home improvements.

What could the next steps be after completing the course?

Once you have successfully completed the introductory course, you may choose to move on to more advanced plastering training and qualifications like the City & Guilds Plastering Course, NVQ Level 2 Plastering Course or a City & Guilds Level 2 Diploma.

If you decide you want to upgrade to a more advanced course after completing your introductory training, we can adjust your training time and fees to account for the five days’ worth of learning already completed.

“I had no experience at all and felt very confident after my training. I have loved how with practice, you improve so quickly,

“I am currently re-plastering most of the walls in my house. I have been using the methods and advice given by Joe and Neal, the only difference is that I use a speedskim for flattening and flexi trowel for the final stages.” - Ricky, Introduction to Plastering student
