Online auction site eBay has been told that safety issues could arise if complex equipment is sold on the marketplace to consumers who have not taken plumbing courses or other relevant training.

Speaking to H&V News, Association of Plumbing and Heating Contractors (APHC) spokesperson Rick Crees suggested the web firm should set up a system in which only registered tradesmen can purchase certain components.

He claimed there are thousands of items being sold on eBay that could cause safety problems, particularly if they are installed by someone who has not completed plumbing courses.

"It's a frightening thought that anyone at all can buy them and try to fit them, whatever their level of skill," Mr Crees was quoted as saying.

The APHC has been existence since 1925 - when it was known as the National Federation of Plumbers and Domestic Engineers - and today boasts about 1,500 members in England and Wales.
