Property consultancy firm King Sturge has called for buildings to be retrofitted to help the environment - something which could offer employment to workers with approved electrical or plumbing qualifications.

The company announced today (December 22nd) that more should be done to make better use of already existing buildings, by improving their space planning and fabric design, which could save a lot of energy.

"Reduced depreciation of assets, greater enjoyment and higher productivity" could also be benefits of retrofitting, it stated.

Angus McIntosh, partner and head of research at the company, commented: "By translating ratings into cash savings (or payments) we would better appreciate the benefits that can be achieved from better energy use in buildings."

If King Sturge's advice is heeded, plumbers, electricians, gas workers and bricklayers could find themselves in demand to provide new services in the new, altered and retrofitted buildings.

King Sturge employs more than 3,800 people in over 210 offices worldwide.
