A woman has described how she took plumbing courses in order to get into a profession in which she is her own boss.

Sammy Parry-Welson, who has two children, described to the Free Press how she thinks there may be a gap in the market for more ladies to join the profession, as single mothers and elderly women can be intimidated by male plumbers.

She explained that she took plumbing courses so she could set up her own business, as she wanted to be in a job that was flexible.

"I wanted to learn a trade and plumbing [is] in my blood, my dad's been a plumber for over 50 years and I was brought up around plumbing," Ms Parry-Welson was quoted as saying.

According to Build It editor Anna-Marie Desouza, such training can be a fantastic investment for all homeowners, since it can teach people to deal with a variety of tasks around the house.
