Workers may be inspired to take gas courses soon, after it was revealed that the European Commission (EC) may be set to make safety regulations stricter for certain equipment.

This news follows the environmental disaster that has taken place in the Gulf of Mexico, which has led to a significant amount of oil being spilled into the water, reported the Press Association.

An increased number of rules regarding best practice may result in engineers needing to sign up to gas courses, so that they can be sure they are up to date on every issue.

Energy commissioner at the organisation Gunther Oettinger pointed out that no oil or gas company can guarantee 100 per cent safety in their operations.

But he was quoted as saying: "Politics and business need to work together to ensure that the European environment and the public are as safe as possible."

The clean-up costs being faced by energy giant BP rose to $3.95 billion this week, according to a statement by the firm.
