A young apprentice who studied an electrical course to find employment as a technician has expressed delight at being handed an accolade in recognition of his talent.

Andrew Emmerson, a 20-year-old from near Darlington, won the Association for Public Service Excellence (APSE) national housing and building category apprentice of the year award despite suffering from dyslexia, reported the Gazette Live.

The former electrical course student described how happy he is with the gong and revealed he had "so much" to tell the interviewing panel about his experience in the profession.

"I am so pleased to have won this. When I knew I was being put forward for the award I was determined to show the judges what I had learned," he was quoted as saying.

The APSE recently announced the winners of its service awards, with Stockton-on-Tees taking home the overall prize, while other victors included Ballymena Borough Council, Kirklees Council and Carmarthenshire County Council.
